About Karen the Artist
I am a member of the SDCAMA (San Diego County Art Mart Association). We display our artwork on the International Lawn in Balboa Park at the corner of Pan American Plaza and Presidents Way, every 2nd and 4th Saturday and Sunday of each month with weather permitting. You can get times and directions on the SDCAMA website.
I have entered the San Diego County Fair for the last three year. In 2009 I placed first and third in the wire wrap category in the Jewelry competition in the Gem and Mineral Pavilion. This year I have placed first in the wire wrap category and third in the Exhibitor's Best Piece and a Merit Award for my educational display.
I have been making jewelry for about five years, but have been wire wrapping for two years. I have been creative and artistic most of my life. I can remember a family friend who brought me art supplies for my 8th or 9th birthday.
I love to paint, mostly in watercolor, but have painted and refinished furniture. I have been a muralist and painted wall hangings. I doodle and draw. Being a home school mom I needed to find something that would fulfill my creative side, but would not take a long time.
I have not had much formal teaching in art, until two years ago when I took my first formal lesson at our local community collage. Mostly I am self-taught and learn much from others who are artistic. I have learned many things from the Internet and God has blessed me with the ability to visually break things down. This means I can see something and figure out how to duplicate it or even change it to make it my own.
Many times I will wire wrap something that others do not know what to do with. I love making jewelry for my family and friends for birthdays and holidays. The love I have for them is shown in my work.
